Can you provide birth dates for John Phillips' children? Supposedly Thomas was the first-born child but it could have been that Sarah was the first. If we had the date and location of the earliest birth it would establish more about John. The birth of Gabriel is established in Loudoun County, Virginia, 1762. But John could have been elsewhere before arrival in Virginia.
